  • Whittling

Author: Alex Bates | Date: 16th October 2018

Such a simple skill which we all did as youngsters whilst sitting around the campfire, why not bring it indoors for the winter.

You do not even need to supply the knives given most Explorers tend to have their own, albeit poorly maintained. Bring a knife sharpener such as a Lanksy and show them knife maintenance followed by having a go at whittling one of the below items:

    ItemDifficultyStarting Wood Size
    Hedgehog WooggleEasy3cm diameter
Cutlery SetMedium7cm wide sawn into 1-2cm thick planks
    Bear statueHard7-9cm

All you need is wood, knives, axe, saw and a drill should you be making the woggles.

  • Ultimate Tower Elasticband Dodge

    Ultimate Tower Elasticband Dodge

Author: Alex Bates | Date: 14th October 2018

Equipment needed is  a marked centre line and tables which are set about 2-3 metres back from the centre line, around 80 paper cups and about 60 elastic bands which are reasonably good to fire and a ping pong ball. Safety googles are a must plus long sleeve clothing where possible.

Each team has the ping pong ball which is 'The Queen' which they are to build a castle to protect the queen. The queen is hidden within a cup within the fort made from paper cups. The objective is then to make the other teams queen fall off the table by firing elastic bands to destroy the castle and dislodge the queen so she falls. However when playing the rules of dodgeball come into play for the teams; if you get hit with an elastic band you are out, if your elastic band gets caught you are out and the team which caught the band can have a player return to the pitch, head shots do not count. If the team gets eliminated through the dodgeball rules the other team wins. Other rules - you are not allowed to cross the centre line, every cup needs to be part of a paper cup tower. It is advisable to have atleast 2 leaders referring, one to watch each team to tell those that get shot as they cannot always feel it.

Equipment :  Tea Lights, Spoons, Chairs

    Time :     10 - 30 mins

    Instructions :

The winning team is the team that get the lit tea light from one end to the other the quickest.

If people cheat make the tea light go back 2 chairs or pause for 10 seconds. To make it more difficult move chairs appart and turn our main hall lights. If you light the Tea Lights 5 mins before the game they should stay alight better.

Please remember that the Tea Lights and hot wax can burn so do a good safety briefing before hand and make sure you have done a thorough risk assesement that you are happy with

  • Spoons

    Author: ian@mmscouts.org.uk | Date: 20th October 2011

Spoons Relay Race. This is a very energetic and fast game and can be played inside or outside.

Equipment :  Spoons 1 per team plus 2 extra, chalk, bowl to put spoons in

    Time :     10 - 20 mins

    Instructions :

To start off with divide the unit into 3 or 4 teams and get them to number off. Get each team to move to a corner of the hall or spread out along the edges. In front of each team draw a chalk circle (or use something to mark a small area like a hoop). Place all the spoons in a bowl in the centre of the room. Call out a number and the Explorers run to collect a spoon and deposit in their circle. They can only carry 1 spoon at a time and the winning team is the one who gets the most spoons. Once all the spoons have gone reset the game. The team who wins the most times are the champions.

You can change the game to make it easier of harder by putting more or less spoons in, Calling more explorers from each team to get spoons, allowing spoons to be taken from teams as well as the centre, making the playing area bigger, or using different items other than spoons.

    Author: ian@mmscouts.org.uk | Date: 20th October 2011

Human Dominoes is a game for the whole unit to show that everyone has something in common with the others in the unit.

    Equipment :  None

    Time :     10 - 30 mins

Gather all the explorers together and set them the challenge that they have to form a line of dominos linked by what they have in common. Start with the leaders to show the prinicple of the game. These characteristics can be colours, pets, football teams, hobbies or anything you can think of. Next 2 other people from the unit who share one of the charactistics stands on the side that is relavent. The new people to join then say the phrase as well including the characteristic that they joined for and a new one for the open side they have. Once everyone has joined up you need to find something in common between the 2 ends so they can join up and show that everyone in the unit has something in common.

Keep reminding the group that they all have things in common and do not single people out for being different.
